Why visit Wheaton River Gardens?
Wheaton River Gardens is a working example of nature’s circles: animal waste to compost to gardens to animal and people food. It is a chance to meet a community of animals, plants and people that live together and depend on each other for well being. It is an exploration of working with nature as our guide, and trying to be respectful of the needs of the planet as well.

About our Farm
Our farm consists of ~6 fenced acres on the banks of the Wheaton River. We intensively use about 1/3 acre for raised beds, maintain a Food Forest, and share space with the animals that live here. Compost from animals, green manures and crop rotation provide nutrient cycling on the farm. In spring, there is egg collecting, lamb feeding, worm observation, wild plant ID, seed planting, compost making and sometimes baby chicks to visit. Learn about wool processing and make a wool marble to take home. Fall is about harvesting, eating, preserving vegetables, wild berry picking, and getting the farm ready for winter. We can also teach sauerkraut and pickling in your classroom.
This farm has been Shiela’s homestead for 40+ years, started by her desire to grow food for her and her kids. Jalfred and his partner Angelune moved to the farm in 2021 to grow food and medicinal plants for their small business. It is an off-grid wilderness farm that provides an active, high quality life for everyone who lives here. The recommended tour duration is 3.5 hours (3 hour min.).
